First opened in 1952, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is the go-to adoption center for animal lovers of all echelons of society, including sports team owners, software billionaires and socialites. The shelter, which adopts out 3,500 animals annually, also accepts many pets that might be refused elsewhere and cares for some 1,200 injured and orphaned wild animals each year. Animal rescue and control services for San Mateo County and low-cost spay/neuter services are among the many other services it provides. INSIDER’S TIP Workdays are best for a stop into the adoption center; weekends draw anywhere from 75 to 100 visitors per day.
Peninsula Equine Medical Center delivers world-class equine health care. A team of board-certifed general practitioners, surgeons and specialists in sports medicine, internal medicine, reproduction and acupuncture, among other things, provides primary care and collaborates with referring doctors of veterinary medicine via mobile services throughout the San Francisco and Monterey Bay area, and at hospitals in Menlo Park and Salinas. Advanced imaging including radiography, ultrasound, CT and nuclear scintigraphy; state-of-the-art surgical suites; and in-house labs and pharmacies make these facilities unrivaled in the area. INSIDER’S TIP A recent merger with Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic in Salinas means more veterinarians and services are now available.
