The cast of Matilda the Musical performs “When I Grow Up.”
Act fast to catch the San Jose premiere of Matilda the Musical. The production by the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Dodger, which hits the local stage March 7 through 12, is part of the first national tour for the highly acclaimed show.
A British import based on the novel by Roald Dahl and adapted by Dennis Kelly, Matilda tells the story of an extraordinary book-loving girl who dreams of a better life, and triumphs over her cruel parents and bullying school headmistress. It’s smart, it’s sweet and—even with a children’s uprising figuring prominently—it’s not only for the kiddos to enjoy.
See for yourself why the Matthew Warchus–directed musical won 50 international awards, including multiple Tony and Olivier awards. But be forewarned: You may end up with addictive tunes such as “Naughty,” “When I Grow Up” and “Revolting Children”—the works of Australian comedian and musician Tim Minchin—stuck in your head for days. Tickets $48–$128, Center for the Performing Arts, San Jose
