In January, Fremont native and reigning U.S. figure skating champion Karen Chen defends her title at SAP Center while also vying for a spot on the 2018 Olympic team.
With the U.S. Figure Skating Championships returning to SAP Center, some of the biggest names in the sport are taking the ice in San Jose—including the Bay Area’s own Karen Chen, Vincent Zhou and Polina Edmunds.
Since it is the final qualifying event before the selection of the team that will represent the United States at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, in addition to crowning the country’s best, the announcement about who’s competing in Pyeongchang, South Korea, will be made at the conclusion of the championships Jan. 7.
“We get great crowds every year, but history has shown that our Olympic year is definitely the strongest of the cycle,” says Bob Dunlop, senior director of events for USFS. “We have a combination of new faces who are hitting their stride going into the Olympics and some returnees from the previous Olympics.”
According to Dunlop, a number of other activities are also scheduled during the championships, among them opportunities to catch past Olympians and figure skating legends. “It’s going to be skate central in San Jose.”
Single tickets as well as packages available, including the Platinum Champions ticket package, $1,298
