It began with a horse named Red Line. When restaurant entrepreneur Angelo Heropoulos sold his stake in the highly successful Opa! chain, he decided to pursue the country life and move to Almaden Valley. There, his young daughter fell in love with an Arabian boarded on a neighboring ranch, so Heropoulos bought both horse and 52-acre spread, where he’s planted a vineyard and garden.
His dream of a farm-to-table restaurant, serving up abundant Greek hospitality, is coming to fruition in the former home of Saratoga’s Sent Sovi. Plentiful outdoor seating and a comfy wine lounge augment the refurbished main dining spot, where guests at the new Hero Ranch Kitchen can feast on seasonally changing dishes like heirloom tomatoes with homemade burrata and walnut pesto topped with caviar; black-eyed pea and arugula salad with grilled white peaches and peach balsamic; watermelon feta salad; and crispy rainbow trout nigiri with a chipotle adobo aioli. Open for dinner, with plans for brunch in the future. 14583 Big Basin Way, Saratoga, 408.355.3697
