An Outside Perspective in a San Jose Mural

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised about $6,500 more than the $15,000 goal, a permanent mural now graces an exterior wall of the Children’s Discovery Museum in downtown San Jose (180 Woz Way).

Commissioned by the San Jose Museum of Art, “Sophie Holding the World Together” was completed in December and marks a collaborative effort by art collective The Propeller Group and muralist El Mac. The large-scale work depicts 7-year-old Sophie Cruz, who has become a face of the American immigration reform movement, along with a quote drawn from a Mario Benedetti poem: “Don’t give up/is is the hour and the best moment” appears in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.

In conjunction with the alfresco art’s creation and unveiling, the first survey exhibition of The Propeller Group is currently on view at the San Jose Museum of Art through March 25.
