Decor sometimes extends inside at the outdoor black-tie fundraiser, which features a chance to see artworks up close, including “The Thinker”—perhaps the most famous of all Rodin sculptures.
When the Leland Stanford Junior Museum opened at Stanford University in 1894 with an art collection assembled by university founders Leland and Jane Lathrop Stanford, it was the largest privately owned museum in the world. It survived two major earthquakes in 1906 and 1989 (bolstered by extensive renovations), and its programs are invigorated with each passing decade, all the better for the 250,000 visitors who walk through its doors each year free of charge. For the 125th anniversary of the Cantor Arts Center, as it’s now known, its biennial benefit has been rebranded from Rodin by Moonlight to Museums by Moonlight to celebrate the campus’ Anderson Collection and its programs as well. The Sept. 28 event fetes Roberta and Steve Denning, and fi gurative painter Jordan Casteel. Co-chairs Sara Abbasi, Melissa Fetter, Christy MacLear and Komal Shah added an additional late-night event with live music, drinks and bites, all the better to lure younger patrons to revel under a full moon.
