A couple creates a light-filled sanctuary on the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe with the help of designer Mead Quin.
A custom table from Adrianna Shamaris and chairs from Carl Hansen & Son grace the dining room overlooking Lake Tahoe's eastern shore.
THE PROJECT
An active and adventurous family of five from the Bay Area embarked on a new journey: creating a new 10,000-square-foot vacation home from the ground up—a place where the couple, their kids and friends could enjoy the splendors of Lake Tahoe. One of the homeowners grew up vacationing on the lake and wanted to pass down those experiences to her children and grandchildren.
THE TEAM
The couple chose Walton Architecture & Engineering (waltonae.com) to design the home. Interior designer Mead Quin (meadquin.com) collaborated with Walton’s team when mapping all interior and exterior living spaces. “Our aesthetic is clean, quiet and refined,” says Quin. “It’s timeless and provides a sense of calm, tranquility and ease.”
Mead says she approaches each project differently. After all, each client possesses different needs for every project. “We invite collaboration while guiding our clients so they can make informed decisions about the look, feel and function of their homes,” she says.
The home merges interior and exterior spaces in nearly every room.
THE GOALS
“Not every new build needs to look brand-new,” says Quin. “One of our major goals with this project was to make it look like it had been there for generations while also being able to serve the generations to come. Walton Architecture did a wonderful job making this large home feel like part of the natural surroundings. Since we wanted the indoors and outdoors to feel the same, that language was equally important inside." She adds there was a lot of freedom for creativity in the design and architecture throughout the process.
The house needed to serve multiple generations and offer plenty of indoor and outdoor space for entertaining. It was essential that the house not feel too imposing. “Our client wanted the house to embrace the seasonal changes of the location so that residents could feel comfortable in the space all year round,” says Quin, adding that the home is nestled into a hillside, inspiring the use of blues, greens and grays inside. “They didn’t want the house to feel new and precious, so creating a cozy and lived-in environment that easily welcomed many occupants was crucial.” Views were also essential; the homeowners wanted each room to boast unobstructed lake vistas.
The kitchen features Rose Uniacke pendants, Hakwood flooring, Troscan Design stools and Calacatta countertops.
LIVING AND DINING ROOMS
Quin’s approach to the living room is a brilliant mix of comfort and drama. A Shiir (shiirrugs.com) rug from De Sousa Hughes (desousahughes.com) lines the space, with sofas upholstered in Rogers & Goffigon (rogersandgoffigan.com) mohair, a bench from Dmitriy & Co. (dimitryco.com), a coffee table from Piet Boon (pietboon.com) and floor lamps from Phoenix Day (phoenixday.com).
The dining room features a custom table by Adrianna Shamaris (adriannashamarisinc.com) surrounded by Carl Hansen & Son (carlhansen.com) chairs. The welcoming space also includes drapery from C&C Milano (cec-milano.us), an area rug from Merida (meridastudio.com) and Space Copenhagen (spacecph.dk) chairs upholstered in Holly Hunt (hollyhunt.com) fabric.

KITCHEN
The kitchen marries form and function, with many friends and family enjoying long days and nights at the new home. Rose Uniacke (roseuniacke.com) pendants, Hakwood (hakwood.com) flooring and Hartmann & Forbes (hartmannforbes.com) window treatments set the room’s tone. Standout pieces include Troscan Design (troscandesign.com) stools, Calacatta countertops from IRG (marblecompany.com), Rocky Mountain Hardware (rockymountainhardware.com) and an Ann Sacks (annsacks.com) backsplash.
PRIMARY SUITE
When the home is one large sanctuary, making the primary suite a microcosm of a great escape is essential. Quin pulled it off beautifully with an array of pillows—dressed in Loro Piana (loropiana.com) and Holly Hunt fabric—atop a custom bed and window seat. The room holds Kerry Joyce (kerryjoice.com) chairs covered in Holly Hunt fabric, Christiane Perrochon (christianeperrochon.com) lamps, EJ Victor (ejvictor.com) nightstands and window treatments from Romo (romo.com) fabric.
“The primary bathroom houses a steam shower, soaking tub by Waterworks (waterworks.com) and custom shelves and vanity with Rocky Mountain Hardware,” says Quin, who also installed Urban Electric (urbanelectric.com) Calacatta countertops and a limestone floor by La Maison Nicolas (lamaisonnicolas.com).
The home's timeless exterior was created by the team at Walton Architecture & Engineering.
HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
“The family was speechless when the finished home was revealed to them,” says Quin. “They’ve already made countless memories in the house—from hosting family holidays and ski trips to enjoying time on the lake and having a place to spend quality time together. The home has continued to be a wonderful escape for everyone.”
