A Los Altos home with a mini vineyard gets a refresh worthy of wine country.
The large Los Altos home now boasts spaces perfect for entertaining guests and for family gatherings.
THE PROJECT
Ask any designer about stately homes, and watch their brows descend. The spaces beg for coziness. Rooms don’t always flow correctly. And for families that love to entertain, finding one or two designated areas that invite interaction isn’t always obvious. These were the thoughts of a couple who own a 10,000-square-foot Los Altos home with a mini vineyard on the property (they dabble in making wine). The couple has two adult children and extended family and friends nearby who visit often—they even created a wine club, a social scene worthy of many toasts and soirees. Their property needed significant revitalization.
The family room features outdoor fabrics to combat heavy traffic and spills, plus a daybed from Lawson-Fenning.
THE TEAM
The family selected Sindhu Peruri, principal and founder of Peruri Design Company (peruridesigncompany.com), to tackle the project. “Growing up in India, I recall my grandfather, a textile merchant, unfurling exquisite hand-loomed sarees blended from silk, cotton and metallic threads,” says Peruri. “The vivid colors, dynamic prints and ornate gold embroidery inspired my love for design and craftsmanship. Fast forward a few decades—this reverence for artisan-made pieces and rich texture has fused with California’s iconic laid-back luxury.” Peruri’s aesthetic is elegant, warm, bold, artfully restrained and carefully curated for each client. Her team specializes in new build construction and renovations, comprehensive design and effortlessly-layered interiors.
The highly functional kitchen invites overflow from parties, as the design team warmed the space with bar stools from BassamFellows.
THE GOALS
“The main challenge was creating a cozy atmosphere that was tailor-made for my clients’ lifestyle of casual entertaining in large groups of friends and family,” says Peruri. “[We also needed] to bring in warmth and add color, texture and interest in furnishings—and curating meaningful and vibrant art that gave them joy.” Since most of the spaces in the home are quite large, nearly all the furnishings are custom-made and scaled to fit the spacious rooms.
“Often, we’re not lucky enough to accessorize and curate fine art for the home,” says Peruri. “My clients wanted complete spaces and allowed us creative freedom to ideate all their spaces with art and accessories. That made all the difference.”
LIVING AND FAMILY ROOMS
“The requirement was to create stylish seating for 14 to 16 guests—the largest we’ve accommodated in one room!” says Peruri, noting the living room had to accommodate the couple’s wine club. “We managed that by designing and placing a large custom sofa across from a large angled sectional. Since the sofa was almost 12 feet long, we designed a side table so the guests had a spot for their plates and drinks.” Standout pieces include a Caste Design (castedesign.com) side table from De Sousa Hughes (desousahughes.com), lounge chairs from Atelier De Troupe (atelierdetroupe.com) and a sculpture from Tom Corbin (corbinbronze.com).
The family room, notes Peruri, accommodates multigenerational, casual gatherings; the space requires a vibe suitable for kids and adults. “We choose outdoor fabrics for most items in the family room and breakfast nook,” says Peruri, who worked with darker color tones and patterned fabrics to help disguise spills and heavy traffic. A rug from Vaheed Taheri (vaheedtaheri.com) lines the room, which features a side table and floor lamp from Sloan Miyasato (sloanm.com) and a daybed from Lawson-Fenning (lawsonfenning.com).
The homeowners gave Peruri Design free reign to select outstanding art for each room in the home.
DINING ROOM AND KITCHEN
The homeowners love minimalist spaces that provide a dramatic punch. For example, they didn’t want anything to detract from the gorgeous patterns of the custom Christopher Farr (christopherfarr.com) via De Sousa Hughes. “The room is simple and neutral with a custom 12-foot dining table, chairs from Sloan Miyasato, and art and sculpture that complement the space,” says Peruri. “The large windows, offering a view of the stunning outdoors, also adds to the decor.”
White and gray lacquered cabinets frame the highly functional kitchen, where overflow from parties inevitably occurs. The design team delivered warmth to the space with bar stools from BassamFellows (bassamfellows.com) via Coup D’Etat (coupdetatsf.com).
The lush property in Los Altos also boasts a mini-vineyard.
PRIMARY SUITE
Since it’s upstairs and oriented perfectly, the primary suite benefits from abundant natural light.
“Our approach was to go moody by using saturated color and high contrast with natural woods and textural furnishings,” says Peruri. “The softer lines and curves in the seating area offer a reprieve from the modern and sleek architecture of the home. We curated large-scale artwork from K Imperial Fine Art (kimperialfineart.com) and a custom free-form rug from Art & Loom (artandloom.com) that was more impactful in the space. We also created a backdrop of a custom display shelf to store their precious memories and mementos.” Rosemary Hallgarten (rosemaryhallgarten.com) Ombre fabric via De Sousa Hughes lines the custom headboard, while other stars of the room include nightstands from Faithful Roots (faithfulroots.com) and a coffee table from & Tradition (andtradition.com).
HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
“The family loves showing off their home,” says Peruri. “They use all the spaces we’ve created for them for lounging, dining, watching TV and entertaining. Rooms that used to be ignored before—including the media room, living room and dining room—are now utilized entirely and often. Though the aesthetic is clean and contemporary, they love the warmth our work brings to the spaces. Their sons love to entertain in their parents’ home and hang out in the media room, which makes my clients very happy.”
A moody palette marks the primary suite, with saturated colors contrasting with natural wood tones.
