Tucked away as a hidden gem in the resplendent heart of California, the friendly Livermore Valley is cradled within a flourish of vineyards and wineries. Situated a mere 45 minutes east of San Francisco, this viticulture sanctuary offers an appealing blend of tradition and innovation, delivering a wine country experience that surpasses expectations.
The Valley’s viticulture roots trace back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first wine grapes. By the 1840s, pioneers like Robert Livermore recognized the region's potential, establishing commercial vineyards that would form the foundation of a thriving wine industry. Today, Livermore Valley's role in shaping California's wine legacy remains significant, boasting a rich tapestry of grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Petite Sirah.
Two notable wineries, Wente Vineyards, and Concannon Vineyard, stand as testaments to the Valley's rich heritage. Wente, America's oldest continuously operating, family-owned winery, played a pivotal role in the state's Chardonnay history. An estimated 80% of all Chardonnay in California can be genetically traced back to a Wente clone. Similarly, Concannon, established in 1883, significantly impacted the state's Cabernet Sauvignon history with its influential clone.
Today, the Livermore Valley harmoniously blends historic wineries and fresh newcomers, all drawn by the rich winemaking tradition, favorable climate, and fertile soils. The region boasts over 40 wineries, from small, limited-release boutiques to substantial industry leaders, each contributing to the Valley's diverse wine portfolio.
In this close-knit community, hospitality is paramount. The Livermore Valley offers a plethora of activities at its wineries, making it an ideal destination for special occasions like weddings and corporate events. A variety of event spaces are available for entertaining family and friends, ranging from cavernous wine cellars to outdoor patios overlooking lush vineyards. Whether it's the walkable urban wineries of Vasco Row, the rustic producers of Greenville Road, or the vineyard flats of Tesla Road, the Valley provides unique experiences for all tastes. Enjoy gourmet food trucks and live music, or pack a picnic to pair with an estate wine tasting amidst acres of vines and rolling hillsides. Some wineries even offer delectable food on-site, perfectly paired with their wines.
One event not to miss is TASTE: The Livermore Valley Wine Experience, happening from October 19th to 22nd, 2023. Competing for prizes in a blind tasting overseen by three judges, guests also have the opportunity to participate in the People's Choice category, voting for the best winery-chef team.
