Mapping out new looks for rooms at home? Try a mini staycation at the new LINE for artistic inspiration.
A floral sculpture by Nell Henderson of Brute Botanïcal offers an homage to the lovely Marin coastline.
Stepping into San Francisco’s new LINE Hotel (thelinehotel.com/sanfrancisco) is more than a mini staycation; it’s a new way to see thrilling regional art and swipe a few ideas. The hotel’s vibrant concept comes from the renowned Los Angeles firm Knibb Design (@knibbdesign). The vision begins in the lobby with a large-format wall sculpture by local multimedia artist Sasinun Kladpetch (@sasicrafts). The work is a menagerie of lost-and-found items (think metal fragments and rebar) that, taken as a whole, offer a sculptural snapshot of daily life.

From its opening last fall, the LINE sought to create more than a place for guests to simply snooze the hours away; instead, the minds behind the property prompt engagement at every turn. In the lobby, visitors discover a floral installation by Nell Henderson of Brute Botanïcal (brutebotanical.com), a multidisciplinary floral studio founded by Henderson in Berkeley. The intricate work includes dried and silk florals, with local thistle, eucalyptus, blush coseytown stars, and poppy pods. The work, an homage to coastal Marin, is refreshed quarterly.

Egret Rookery, a lightbox installation by Oakland-based artist Laura Plageman (@lauraplageman), also graces the property as part of her Response series. To create each image, Plageman visits scenic spots along the California coast that attract thousands of visitors each year; the artist regards the locations as objects themselves, as each becomes physically mutated through the forces of nature and, just as important, human impact.

In March, frequent LINE collaborator Jonathan Carver Moore christened his eponymous gallery (jonathancarvermoore.com) on the ground floor of the LINE. The gallery builds positive community experiences through a Black, LGBTQ lens for art lovers. “I truly believe art should be for everyone and cannot wait to shine a light on diverse, impactful talent for all to see—but especially for our dynamic, downtown San Francisco community,” says Moore. “Making this investment in a space I’m so passionate about, in the community I call home, was extremely important to me.”
Of course, the new 236-room property is more than a pretty tableau. It also features Dark Bar (a reimaging of the classic hotel lobby bar), Rise Over Run (a jaw-dropping rooftop bar, terrace and solarium), and Tenderheart (an eatery showcasing regional fare), making the property a place to get lost while finding something new.
