On Friday, May 19th, the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose hosted its 19th annual Legacy for Children Award gala. The Legacy for Children Award is presented annually in recognition of an individual or organization that is dedicated to advancing the lives and learning of children. This year's honoree was Sesame Street legend Sonia Manzano for her positive influence on the lives of millions of children and parents. Sonia Manzano, better known as Maria for 44 years, helped shape children’s programming and early childhood education and was a pioneering trailblazer as one of television’s first leading Latina women in the infancy of educational programming. The event raised $1.3 million for the museum’s hands-on educational exhibits and programs, which have a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion. Programs are designed to give children the tools that will help them develop into the talented, creative and diverse workforce of tomorrow. Funds will also support the launch of the museum’s new national access program, “Museums for All” that will start in the fall.
