Olympic gold medalist and Bay Area native Kerri Walsh Jennings hosts the Peaceful Warrior Retreat for women this month.
Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings
Leaps of faith are nothing new to Kerri Walsh Jennings. The three-time beach volleyball Olympic gold medalist, who grew up in Santa Clara and attended Stanford, recently launched the p1440 Foundation, which aims to unite, empower and inspire through volleyball. This month, Walsh Jennings celebrates the new foundation—named after the number of minutes in a day—with the women-only Peaceful Warrior Retreat at Stanford’s beach volleyball stadium.
The event will include low-impact workouts with Pilates master Kerry Wachtfogel; friendly beach volleyball training with Walsh Jennings’s coach, Arthur Carvalho; a mindfulness session with psychologist Dr. Michael Gervais; and inspiration by New York Times bestselling author, health advocate and chef Danielle Walker.
“I intend to live an inspired and empowered life every day, but I need reminders,” says Walsh Jennings. “This retreat will remind us all that life is meant to be fun—even while challenging—and it’s best experienced in the moment. The themes are an appreciation of the simple joys and the inherent power we all hold within.”

Women who attend the event, says Walsh Jennings, will leave inspired to live more playfully and mindfully. “They’ll have listened, learned, engaged and nourished themselves in a way that serves their entire being,” she says. “Women will be reminded that engaging in play is a powerful way of learning and fortifying one’s spirit. They’ll be surprised by how much their energy level will positively shift after this experience.”
Walsh Jennings, who has three children with her husband, fellow pro beach volleyball player Casey Jennings, says this month’s retreat arrives at the perfect moment personally. “I’m most looking forward to participating in every little bit of this retreat alongside these incredible women,” she says. “It takes a special person to sign up for things that will knowingly take you out of your comfort zone. Anyone who chooses to do so will be happy they did—and we’ll all be made better by everyone’s courage and generosity in supporting the cause.” Sept. 6-7, Stanford University, 250 Bonair Siding Road, Stanford, p1440.org
