There’s a new brightening agent on the scene, and it’s packing the power of ancient roots to make you shine.
Herbivore Botanicals is a plant-based skincare product line dedicated to bringing customers a holistic and cruelty-free beauty routine that gets the job done without cutting any corners. The company's popular lines of serums, oils and masks lean on ingredients including rosehip, orchids, rosewater and hibiscus; but today, Herbivore welcomes turmeric to the chat.
Nova is a brightening serum that harnesses the power of vitamin C and turmeric to give you a noticeably-brighter skin glow in about seven days of use. With a formula that features 15 percent vitamin C, Nova has the power to improve dark spots and even skin tone, but because it's crafted by Herbivore founder Alexander Kummerow, you can be sure it's safe for sensitive skin.
“I have very sensitive skin,” Kummerow says, “and everything is tested on me.”
We’ve personally tested the product and can say with certainty that Nova goes on smooth and melts into the skin quickly. It only takes a couple pumps to get the job done. Don’t be put off by the yellow tint. That’s the sign of the turmeric hard at work, but it won’t leave any discoloration. It even smells a bit like turmeric, and that’s all part of the plan.
“We’re a sensorial brand,” Kummerow says. “We want people to indulge in all the sense when using Herbivore.”

Available in 1 oz, 30 mL bottles, Nova is as eco-conscious as it is vegan. The bottle is made of glass with a 50 percent recycled plastic pump. The label is silk screened, so you don’t have to peel it off before tossing your used and cleaned bottle in the recycling bin.
Nova is safe for use day and night, and Kummerow says it pairs perfectly with Herbivore’s Lapis Blue Tansy Face Oil. It’s great to sit under your makeup, but he does caution against layering with too many products, just because it can become confusing and it’s a tad unnecessary. He does say not to layer it with any acids.
While it will oxidize over time, the new Nova comes with a 24 month shelf-life, and you’d most likely run out way before the two-year mark.
Selling for $64 a bottle, Nova is available via Herbivore’s website or at Sephora stores worldwide. Learn more about the new turmeric-powdered vitamin C serum and try it for yourself at herbivorebotanicals.com.
