A Galloping Time at L'Auberge Del Mar

Lauren Swanson | October 31, 2017 | Story Travel

Hold onto your floppy hats, fascinators and fedoras. The 34th annual Breeders’ Cup World Championships (VIP packages from $1,799, will take place for the first time in Del Mar, Calif., Nov. 3 and 4 at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. In other words, race enthusiasts will get a little extra surf with their turf this fall.

With a total purse of more than $28 million—the largest in North America—and the highest caliber of horses, owners, jockeys and trainers, the race is on to secure hotel rooms before they sell out. L’Auberge Del Mar, A Destination Hotel (suite rates from $629 per night), is minutes from the track and steps away from the beach, shops and restaurants.

Boasting boutique cottage aplomb and dreamy views of the Pacific Ocean, L’Auberge Del Mar will also play host to several events surrounding the races, including a Bing Crosby Party (Nov. 1), Del Mar Traditions (Nov. 2) and the Breeders’ Cup Opening Day After-Party (Nov. 3), all featuring live entertainment, signature cocktails and dining pop-ups.

Plus, famous hat fabricator Christine A. Moore Millinery will be on hand in the hotel’s Living Room Bar with a pop-up shop so guests can stock up on stylish chapeaux.
