A Frosty Affair

Anh-Minh Le | March 26, 2018 | Story

Cirque du Soleil’s first-ever ice experience is coming to town for eight shows only, March 28 through April 1. In Crystal, the title character falls through a frozen pond and lands in a surreal, parallel world. According to spokesperson Julie Desmarais, “You will see acrobatics brought to a different level and some you have never seen before; jugglers and trapeze artists perform on ice skates and a duo-straps act features the perfect combination of acrobatics and ice skating.” There are 40 performers in total, and the new setting meant that the 22 acrobats and musicians had to learn to skate, while the 18 skaters had to learn acrobatics. (Canadian figure-skating legend Kurt Browning was brought on board to assist with the skating part of the creative process.) “Cirque du Soleil has always been audacious in our way of developing shows,” says Desmarais. “We have always pushed the boundaries of what is possible, and it seemed like a natural progression to take the creation of a new show onto the ice. … We wanted to use the different characteristics of ice—speed, fluidity, reflexivity—to achieve stunning visual effects and acrobatic prowess that defy the imagination.” Tickets from $40, Producer seats $140-$180, SAP Center, San Jose
