A family of five renovates a lakeside East Bay home to align with their active lifestyle.
Curved green velvet chairs and a petal crystal chandelier from John-Richard add warmth to the dining room.
THE PROJECT
A couple with three children (two teenage girls and a pre-teen boy) wanted their recently purchased home to harmonize with the constant movement of their daily lives. The house, built in 2003 and nestled next to a hidden lake, offered a canvas of possibilities amid aging walls, outdated fixtures and a layout that didn’t optimize its 3,610 square feet efficiently.
THE TEAM
The couple selected Rati Mishra, founder and principal of DekoRati Interiors (dekorati-interiors.com), for the project. “My design aesthetic is classic, bold and timeless, leaning toward the transitional style,” says Mishra. “We must delve deeply into the home’s architecture, scale and style to create designs that resonate with these elements. We also consider the homeowners’ lifestyles and personalities.”
Mishra and her team transformed the guest and primary bathrooms, kitchen and fireplace, adding new flooring, fresh paint, wallpaper, a glass staircase and a bar area. They also replaced all doors and hardware and thoughtfully designed and curated furnishings for the living room, dining room, family room, office, dining nook and primary bedroom.
The living room features a channel-tufted sofa from Caracole and a statement coffee table from Noir.
THE GOALS
“My clients wanted to preserve the home’s architectural integrity while highlighting the serene beauty of its lakeside setting,” says Mishra, who ensured every improvement in the home combined style and functionality. “They strongly preferred modern elements and a monochromatic color scheme and aimed to create a space that exudes luxury and features unique pieces.”
LIVING ROOM
“Given the open floor plan encompassing the entryway, staircase and living room, our biggest challenge was to create distinct spaces while ensuring they blended together,” says Mishra. “We designed a glass staircase to bring modern vibes to the home. We added accent mosaic tile into the entry and used Carrara marble floor tiles to evoke a sense of expansiveness.”
Mirhra says the room’s furnishings establish architectural connections with the tall windows and high ceilings. “A channel-tufted sofa from Caracole (caracole.com), a statement coffee table from Noir (caracole. com), and a floor lamp from Kenneth Cobonpue (kennethcobonpue.com) serve as key conversation pieces,” says the designer. “The accent and swivel chairs from Bernhardt (bernhardt.com) were upholstered in custom fabric. We layered long drapes in net fabric and featured a tall contemporary art piece from Wendover (@wendoverart).”
The design team reconfigured the kitchen to create an L-shaped layout with a black-and-white theme.
DINING ROOM
This room overlooks a picturesque lake with a fountain, offering a serene and calming backdrop. Given its rectangular shape and defined dropdown ceiling, the design team created warmth using textured Pictou wallpaper from Fabricut (fabricut.com) and a marble-top sideboard from Caracole. “To balance these elements, we added curved green velvet chairs and a petal crystal chandelier from John-Richard (johnrichard.com),” says Mishra, who also incorporated chairs from Oroa (oroa.com), a table from Sonder Living (sonderliving.com), a rug from Surya (surya. com) and drapery from Elegant Drapery Concepts (elegantdraperyconcepts.com).
KITCHEN
“The clients desired an open concept with the family room and particularly wanted a waterfall island,” says Mishra. To accomplish this, her team reconfigured the U-shaped kitchen into an L-shaped layout with a larger waterfall island, adjusting the plumbing as needed. They also removed the corner pantry to create additional cabinet space.
“A custom hood was designed in collaboration with CopperSmith (worldcoppersmith.com), complementing the white appliances from GE Café (cafeappliances.com),” says Mishra. “The clients envisioned a black and white kitchen, with Bentley Quartz from Cambria (cambriausa.com) as the inspiration piece, complemented by leather pendant lights.” The custom cabinets were designed in collaboration with Demetra Cabinetry (demetracabinetry.us).
A cozy dining nook boasts built-in bay window seating.
PRIMARY SUITE
With the space divided into two areas, Mishra aimed to create a cohesive feel while giving each its unique character. “We introduced a cozy ambiance with a modern horizontal channeled panel bed from Caracole paired with a waterfall-style nightstand from Arteriors (arteriorshome.com), featuring a faux marble facade in a cloud finish and vintage brass trims,” says Mishra, who added a wick chandelier to provide a warm glow. “To enhance comfort, we designed a snug seating nook with warm caramel velvet fabric opposite the fireplace, perfect for our client’s favorite TV moments.”
The primary suite features a bed from Caracole paired with waterfall-style nightstands from Arteriors.
HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
“Although the project spanned nearly six months with extensive remodels and renovations, the final result left our clients in awe,” says Mishra. “They were thrilled with how everything came together and love entertaining friends and family in the newly renovated space.”
The primary suite’s bathroom offers a quiet sanctuary as plenty of natural light spills into the room.
